About Little Seal Designs

Hi there, and welcome to my little corner of Amigurumi crochet. My name is Sage, and I’m the designer (and web dev, marketer, accountant, etc) behind Little Seal Designs. I put so much care into the creation of my patterns, and I hope you love making these new little friends as much as I do.

A little about me…

I’m a Canadian girl living in a coastal country town in Australia with my husband, our toddler, and menagerie (dog, cats, chooks (chickens), and bees). I’m a stay-at-home Mum, crocheting while my toddler sleeps, and busy running after her the rest of the time. We live in a tiny house that we built, on a quarter of an acre block, and we are attempting to “Permaculture” it as much as possible.

My crochet journey started as a teenager when my sister showed me crochet Pokemon on Deviantart…after we managed to figure it out by stumbling through the few YouTube videos available back then, we quickly became “hooked” (sorry), and the rest is history. I’ve been crocheting through different jobs, houses, countries, and responsibilities. I love that it’s such a portable craft I can take anywhere.

I started creating my own patterns shortly after learning to crochet, and let’s just say some of them are better kept in the archive 😬 After some more years of much-needed experience I was able to launch patterns like my Bilby and have others feature in magazines. It wasn’t until the start of 2023 though that I decided to give the business a “real go.” The first year had its ups and downs, but I found my niche, found a great group of business crocheters to collaborate with, and I’m more excited than ever to get new patterns into your hands.

…and a little about the business

Little Seal Designs focuses on crochet for play, bringing you patterns to inspire your imagination, or the imaginations of loved ones as gifts. Aspects of playability make their way into every design, whether that’s the toys being able to stand on their own, having semi-poseable limbs, or being customizable to better suit the character you’re creating. The facial features in particular are kept simple to align with Waldorf/Steiner philosophy, leaving space for the imagination to fill in “the blanks.” If you also love(d) stories like Lord of the Rings, Redwall, Warriors, and Narnia, you’ve found your crochet home.

The yarn

Almost all of my patterns are made with DK weight yarn in mind, but can easily be adjusted to other yarns and hook sizes (as is the case with most Amigurumi!). I love working with wool, and my favourite yarn is Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 8Ply. It’s a local company using Australian wool, machined in-house, and is just so lovely to work with — as a bonus for Amigurumi, it comes in so many lovely colours!

Psst! Want to support my business without buying a pattern? Buying me some yarn will have me forever grateful ❤️

The rest of the supplies

Hooks: Clover Amour. Usually a 2.75mm kinda’ gal
Stitch Marker: A piece of leftover yarn in a colour I’m not working with…very high tech!
Favourite Tool: Hemostats. The absolute best tool for stuffing Amigurumi, especially those long limbs or hard-to-reach places.

Okay, enough about me, check out these other great Amigurumi Designers ❤️

In no particular order, and definitely not all of the amazing designers I know, but a few that come to mind…
